BISHOP SIGNS UP FOR YORK HALL DATE

Posted on: 29 Jan 2020

UNBEATEN WELTERWEIGHT PROSPECT Alex Bishop has been signed by Frank Warren and will make his Queensberry Promotions debut at York Hall on February 22.

The 24-year-old launched his professional journey in June 2018 and accumulated a 3-0 record before taking time out to assess his career options.

The former England international and Haringey Box Cup winner, who helped prepare Luke Campbell for his world title tilt against Vasiliy Lomachenko as well as providing sparring for Ricky Burns, is managed by Tunde Ajayi and trained by Ed Adabs.

The Luton man makes his return to the ring on the undercard of the British super bantamweight title rematch between Brad Foster and Lucien Reid, along with the super middleweight clash between Kody Davies and Umar Sadiq. He views the occasion as his second coming as a boxer.

“It is a long time coming and I’ve had over a year out, so I feel it is overdue and I am ready to make my second debut,” considered Bishop, who teamed up with manager Ajayi in October.

“The reasons behind it that I had a change of team who I needed to get comfortable with, but I have been training since my last fight and have not stopped at all.

“I wanted to figure out the best thing for me moving forward. I had opportunities to box and contracts offered to me from quite a few other managers, but me and Tunde clicked straight away and I knew it was right for me.”

Linking up with the Lion trainer Ajayi led Bishop to the promotional empire of Frank Warren and the prospect of furthering his career in the spotlight. It is a development he is more than happy about, while insisting his progression with come at the correct pace.

“It is a big deal for me. Every boxer from growing up as an amateur wants to be signed by the big promoters and boxing on the big shows. It is a dream come true and will be amazing to get such exposure. It will be mad.

“There is no rush, no need to make for lost time because I’ve been improving anyway. Tunde is the man in control and I know he is not going to rush my career.”

Alex Bishop features at York Hall on February 22 on the undercard of Brad Foster defending his British and Commonwealth super bantamweight titles in a rematch against the also unbeaten Lucien Reid. At super middleweight, unbeaten former Team GB amateur star Kody Davies (10-0) goes in with the popular ‘Top Boxer’ Umar Sadiq (9-1).

Also on the bill is thrilling super bantamweight prospect Dennis ‘The Menace’ McCann for his sixth professional assignment, Southampton snapper Ryan ‘The Piranha’ Garner (8-0) aiming to make a timely return and make up for lost time at super featherweight, as well as featherweight starlet Louie Lynn (5-0) from Banstead looking to build on his impressive Queensberry Promotions debut in December.

Top drawer former amateurs and now new professionals Henry Turner (super lightweight, 1-0), Eithan James (super lightweight, 2-0) and Sam Noakes (lightweight, 2-0) get to take the next step towards early title contention, while Muhammad Ali – elite amateur and 2016 Rio Olympian – makes his professional debut at bantamweight.
