Biography

Liam Smith aka Beefy

Liam Smith is a talented professional Super-Welterweight boxer and the former WBO World Super-Welterweight Champion. He has won the British, Commonwealth, WBA Continental, WBO Intercontinental and WBO World Super-Welterweight titles.

Smith has a tough chin and the boxing skills to throw opposition around the ring for the full stretch. However, he also has potentially lethal power, winning some fights by a notable stoppage.

He is the brother of boxers Paul, Stephen and Callum Smith.

As an amateur boxer, Liam Smith won the 2007 & 2008 ABA English Championships against Luke Gray and Steve Turner.

Smith challenged Steve O’Meara for the vacant Commonwealth Light-Middleweight Championship in only his 14th pro fight. He had fought for no professional boxing titles before and it was also his first twelve-rounder.

Smith won the title bout by unanimous decision at the London ExCel on December 12 2012.

In 2013 he won the vacant British Light-Middleweight title by points in a twelve-round tear-up against Erick Ochieng at the Olympia in Liverpool.

Liam Smith against Mark Thompson

It was after this victory that Liam Smith really begun to ex his knockout power. In the first defence of his British Light-Middleweight title, Smith smashed Mark Thompson and won by a round four TKO at the Echo Arena, Liverpool on December 7 2013.

2014 saw Smith defend his British belt and win the vacant WBA Continental Light-Middleweight title with dramatic stoppages against Jason Welborn and Zoltan Sera.

Both opponents had respectable records, Smith was kicking down the doors of the upper ranks in his division to make a ferocious entrance.

The Scouse warrior went on to stop Robert Talarek by a round eight TKO in March 2015. In the following month, he emphatically finished David Ezequiel Romero with a round seven TKO and won the vacant WBO Intercontinental Light-Middleweight title.

On October 10 2015, Smith announced himself on the World stage with a stunning knockout of tough American John Thompson. By winning the WBO Super-Welterweight belt, Smith become the first Liverpudlian to win a World Title since the great John Conteh.

Smith emphatically defended his World Title with a second-round stoppage win over Montenegro’s Predrag Radosevic at Liverpool’s Echo Arena. ‘Beefy’ dropped his challenger to the canvas with a signature crippling left body hook.

Smith travelled to Dallas in September 2016 to defend his WBO crown against Mexican pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez. Despite being a huge star, Canelo was the challenger and put in a convincing performance to take the belt, eventually halting Smith with a sickening body shot in the ninth round.

In April 2017, Smith beat his bitter domestic rival Liam Williams in controversial fashion at the Manchester Arena. Welshman Williams, 24, was withdrawn from the fight by his corner at the start of the 10th round with blood pouring from a severe cut to his eye.

Smith v Williams

Smith was unable to win the interim WBO Super-Welterweight belt that was on the line as he had failed to make the weight before the bout.

Smith and Williams will rematch again in an Official Eliminator for the WBO Super-Welterweight belt at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on Saturday 11th November.
