TIME FOR MORE BEEF ON BEEFY?

Munguia v Smith

By Frank Warren

LIAM SMITH, AS always, gave his absolute everything in his bid to become WBO world super welterweight champion for the second time in the early hours of Sunday morning over in Las Vegas.

Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough on the night against a talented young champion in Jaime Munguia and the shame of it is that we didn’t get to see Beefy at his very best at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

He seemed to be slightly off the pace and was unable to inflict his strengths on the unbeaten Mexican. Munguia was quicker out of the blocks and got himself into a rhythm that he was able to maintain for most of the 12 rounds.

One thing you can be sure of though is that Liam will come again. He will know himself that this was a fight he could have done better in and will want to put it right.

Liam is a great competitor who has operated at the top level at 154lbs for a long time and perhaps his biggest decision now is whether to afford himself some additional poundage by moving up to middleweight.

It could well be a move that rejuvenates his career and opens up new opportunities. Sometimes, without even realising it, boxers can lose something remaining at a weight for a prolonged period of time.

Moving up often gives them a new lease of life and a new set of challenges to focus the mind on.

I am sure it is something Liam will be giving serious consideration to before we nail down his next fight date.

Meanwhile, Munguia looks like he possesses the ability to mix it with the best of them and has a big future in the sport.

He is big at the weight and looks to be a tough sod with a great engine that will serve him well as he continues to step up.

My only concern about him is that he doesn’t look hard to hit and for someone with ambitions to fight Canelo or Golovkin down the line, this is something they would doubtless exploit.

But he has got a lot of time on his side to develop and I expect we will be seeing plenty more of him in the years ahead.

TERRY FLANAGAN HAS got himself a tough assignment in the World Boxing Super Series after he was selected by WBC Interim champion Regis Prograis for quarter final combat.

Prgorais is the number 1 seed going into the tournament. However, I do believe it is a fight Terry can win. If he does he will have a belt strapped around his waist again and could setup some career defining nights for him over the next 12 months.
